Module 12

Information from Course Outline
Module 12, Closes Monday, November 26th

Introduction
So far we have had a good overview of the science of toxicology. We have dealt with certain laws and regulations only in so far as necessary. But we recognize that most engineers and scientists that work with toxicology on a day to day basis are driven by some law or regulation, rather than by a desire to uncover a scientific truth. Also, we seldom are involved with actual toxicity testing, but must rely on various published lists and factors. Here we overview the major sets of laws and regulations that use toxicology, then present some lists and factors that we often use in practice. I will try to explain the strong and weak points about the laws and lists, as I see them.

Homework.
There are 25 points for this module's homework. a.) 5 points for quiz, b.)10 points for individual written assignment, c.) 10 points for the discussion, and d.) extra credit points for the message to the instructor.

a.) Access the quiz through Blackboard. The quiz refers to numbers you need to pick off the tables referenced in the lesson. A copy of the quiz is found here.

b.) Look up your three chemicals on the various lists that are linked in the lesson. Here is a more detailed description. Email your work in a Word file. Label the Subject: ENVE 652 HW 12

c.) Discussion. Pretend it is January 2001 and President Bush has asked your team to advise him on the new arsenic standard. He is tired of the debate and wants you to give him a number: 1 ppb, 3 ppb, 10 ppb, 20 ppb. Remember at the 10 ppb standard would cost the average utility rate payer $32 per year, but the cost would be substantially higher for systems treating less than 3,300 people. EPA estimates this cost would range between $58 to $327 per year. You are not allowed to average your work. Your team must agree to one of those numbers. Pray to St. Carmela, the patron saint of regulators.

d.) You may append a message to the instructor to the end of your written assignment described in b.). Possible extra credit points for pointing out typo's or glitches in the material, suggesting a topic for Module 14, or any good questions, comment or criticisms.
