Module 3
Information from Course Outline
Module 3, Closes Monday, September 17
Introduction
This module will probe some of the major effects of toxicants on cell function.
As an example, we'll examine in some depth the actions of nerve gas. We'll then
finish the chapter on kinetics.
Reading from Stein and Brown
Chapter 4 (read it all, but read from the last paragraph on page 57 to end "lightly.") Suggest you
read Submodule 3A before reading the book. Also read the rest of Chapter 2 after you have
read Submodule 3C. Also, some of the closure module information is very pertinent to the material.

Homework.
There are 25 points for this module's homework. a.) 10 points for the auto-quiz
you access through Blackboard, b.) 5 points for a question about your chemicals,
c.) 5 points for the discussion, and d.) 3 points for the message to the instructor.
a.) Access the quiz through Blackboard. A copy of the quiz is found here.
b.) As you mobilize for your MSDS Project, you will bump into lots of things that we have not covered yet. Ask one question that might help you write a better project. (This would be a question that relates to "your" chemicals.) Send this in a Word document. (The kind of question that indicates you have started to "dig" into your chemicals will get a better grade than a general question, although I might not be able to answer it.)
c.) For your group discussion, look over Jellyfish. It relates poisoning from "natural" chemicals, properly called "toxins." For your discussion, relate if you have even been "stung" by a toxin. Are you allergic, that is have a reaction greater than most people would? Did you get systemically sick? Read the submissions of your group. Comment on the "best" or "yuckiest" of the submissions.
d.) For the message to the instructor, ask at least one question about the material in the module. Put this question in the Word document after the question about your chemicals.
