When a radioactive source is aimed at a photographic film and focused through charged plate, the film was exposed in three locations, corresponding to three types of charged particle. Also, the amount of material that was required to stop those particles varied. The three types are known as alpha, gamma, and beta radiation.

Gamma rays are electromagnetic (EM) radiation and not particles (for most physicists).

A fourth type of radiation is neutral and does not expose film.
