Preliminary COURSE OUTLINE

 

Note: this outline will generally follow the structure of the course. There will be some changes as the course progresses - for example, some assignments. Watch for changes on Blackboard or on the individual Modules (if there's a conflict, Blackboard prevails)

Module 1, Closes Monday, January 26
PROJECTS IN CONTEMPORARY ORGANIZATIONS: INTRODUCTION, OVERVIEW, DEFINITIONS Read Chapter 1, including the sidebars. Review Submodules 1A, 1B and 1C. Read Submodules 1D, 1E, 1F and 1G (old Closure sections showing some of the questions that have been asked in prior classes.) There is a quiz in Blackboard. Post "Getting Acquanited" information as discussed, and ask the instructor questions as directed.

Module 2, Closes Monday, February 2
STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND PROJECT SELECTION Read Chapter 2 and the Submodules 2A, 2B and 2C. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 4, 6 and 8, Class Discussion Question 24, Problems 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 and the L&M Power incident at the end of Chapter 2 (answer the questions at the end of the incident).

Module 3, Closes Monday, February 9
THE PROJECT MANAGER. Read Chapter 3 and the Submodules 3A, 3B and 3C. Start Group Project 1. (See description in the learning module hyperlink called Group Project 1, due February 16.) Individual homework: Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 2, 3, 5, and 9, and Class Discussion Question 18. Group homework (see instructions): Class Discussion Question 21 and the Newcastle Nursing incident at the end of Chapter 3.

Module 4, Closes Monday, February 16
PROJECT CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND NEGOTIATION. Read Chapter 4 and the Directed Reading starting on page 183. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 3, 7 and 8. Based on your reading of the Methods of Resolving Interpersonal Conflict (the Reading that started on page 183), write 3 or 4 paragraphs describing how you perceive you handle interpersonal conflicts, the worst example of a boss or boss's boss methods of handling these (fictitious names only, please),and, based on your reading, how you might improve your methods of handling conflict. Group Project 1 due.

Module 5, Closes Monday, February 23
THE PROJECT IN THE ORGANIZATION. Read Chapter 5 and Submodules 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D and 5E. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 1, 2, and 4, and the Shaw's Strategy incident at the end of Chapter 5. Class Discussion Questions 12 and 16. Term paper requirements will be posted as well.

Module 6, Closes Monday, March 2
PROJECT ACTIVITY AND RISK PLANNING. Read Chapter 6. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 4, 7 and 16 Problems 1 and 2, the Ringold's Pool and Patio Supply incident. Class Discussion Question 24.

Module 7, Closes Monday, March 9
PROJECT BUDGETING AND COST AND RISK ESTIMATION. Read Chapter 7. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 2 and 9, Class Discussion Questions 11, 15 and 17, Problem 6, and the Preferred Sensor Company incident. Group Project 2 due on Friday, March 9.

SPRING BREAK - March 16 - 19 (nothing due)

Module 8, Closes Monday, March 23
USING PROJECT. Use this Module to get started in scheduling and use the tutorial in MS Project.

Module 9, Closes Monday, March 30
PROJECT SCHEDULING. Read Chapter 8. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 6, 7 and 11, Problems 8, 21, 22 and 27 and the Yankee Chair Company incident at the end of Chapter 8. Class Discussion Questions 13 and 19. Group Project 3 Due on Friday, March 30.

Module 10, Closes Monday, April 6
PROJECT RESOURCE ALLOCATION. Read Chapter 9. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 1, 2 and 7, and Problems 3, 9 and 13. Answer the Byce Power and Tool Company incident at the end of Chapter 9. Class Discussion Questions 9, 16 and 17.

Module 11, Closes Monday, April 13
PROJECT MONITORING AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS Read Chapter 10. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 2, 6 and 7, and Problems 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and the Jackson Insurance Company and The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers incidents at the end of Chapter 10. Class Discussion Questions 12 and 16.

Module 12, Closes Monday, April 20

PROJECT CONTROL Read Chapter 11. Prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 2 and 10, and Problems 2, 3 and 4, the Night Tran Construction Company incident at the end of Chapter 11. Class Discussion Questions 18 and 21.

Module 13, Closes Monday, April 27
PROJECT AUDITING AND TERMINATION. Read Chapters 12 and 13. From Chapter 12, prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 5 and 6, Class Discussion Question 19, the Gerkin Pension Service Co. incident at the end of Chapter 12. From Chapter 13, prepare written responses to Material Review Questions 2 and 14, Class Discussion Questions 10, 11 and 17, and the Excel Electronics incidents at the end of Chapter 13.

FRIDAY, May 1: Term Paper due this date.
