Physical Treatment

Chemical treatment


1. Be able to discuss these terms:
water-octanol partitioning, polar, non-polar, hydrophobic, hydrophilic, colloid, emulsions,
2. Be able to discuss - in two or three sentences - the various chemical treatment process and the kinds of wastes they might be used for:
Neutralizations (acid-base), Precipitation, coagulation and flocculation, oxidation-reduction, disinfection, ion exchange, stabilization.

Biological Treatment


I. General
  A. Know the meanings of:
    1. bacteria, cyano bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, heterotroph, autotroph, (both photosynthetic and chemosynthetic)
    aerobic, anaerobic, facultative
  B. Factors that affect growth: pH, Temperature, nutrients (know some), toxic chemicals.
  C. Typical growth curve and factors that control
  D. Major chemical equations
