Module 1 Learning Goals.

Sub-module 1A. An exercise to get into Blackboard and learn some administrative details about assignments.

Sub-module 1B. An exercise to get the students to meet each other.

Sub-module 1C. An introduction to toxicology. The goal is to introduce a several vocabulary words that are common in toxicology and are needed for the homework This sub-module has its own learning goals on the last slide.

Sub-module 1D. Reviews the most common terminology for expressing dose. Vocabualry: mg/L; ppm; vapor;

Sub-module 1E. A quick overview of biology. Explain how the names of test animals are derived, formal naming. Introduces the concept of species and strain of animal. Differentiate species from strain. Understand the variety of strains and the specialization of certain strains. Vocabulary: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, strain.

Sub-module 1F. Become familiar with the few elements important for biology: C, N, O, H, P, S, Na, Cl.
Some common ways of showing bonding and representing molecular structure. The "stick rule," shorthand notation.
Also, oxygen and nitrogen are electronegative; carbon and hydrogen are not electronegative.
Ionic, Covalent, and Polar covalent bonds, and hydrogen bonding
Polar and non-polar
pH scale
hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions, self-assembly, and micelles
Difference between an ion and a radical.
